Cybersecurity and Data Privacy TechMeeting in San Francisco
On Monday April 16th, the Global Open Innovation Network hosted a Techmeeting on Data Security and Data Privacy in San Francisco. Around 60 participants attended the event, including representatives from Daher, Valeo, Airbus, Total, SAP and Accenture.
The panel discussion focused on security and data privacy in this new reality. Sovane Bin, CEO and Founder of Odaseva set the stage by first defining what security is. Security of information means guaranteeing confidentiality, integrity and availability of information (the CIA triad). Our other panelists, Gorav Arora from Gemalto and Ron Tosto from Verizon Enterprise Solutions, also added that security of information should also include auditability and accountability.
Given the latest data breaches and press coverage on this topic, people are more aware and concerned over how their data is being used. Protecting data is a question of perspective; who has the data, where does it go and how is it being used? One of the main issues of security is that it has always been a trade-off between customer experience and protection. Security is also hard to do because of human factor and risky behavior, and that the value of data changes over time in an evolving tech landscape.
The impeding European GDPR regulation is attempting to lay the foundation for security and data protection standards. The EU GDPR was designed to harmonize data privacy laws across Europe, to protect and empower all EU citizens data privacy and to reshape the way organizations across the region approach data privacy. It defines an objective and not a solution. GDPR states that data is the property of the people it describes and not the property of the people who own the data. For more information on GDPR see here.
GDPR implies many legal and technical implications for businesses handling personal information of their customers. There is obviously an opportunity for startups to develop new solutions to improve the security and protection of personal information.
The Global Open Innovation Network invited 7 startups to present their solution and discovered some new and innovative approaches to security and data protection. The presenting startups were: StackPath, Cryptomove, Appthority, Lookout, Elevate Security, IotaBEAM, and Zeguro.
