“AI CHALLENGE PARIS REGION 2018”: THE 1st INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Since April 12, the Paris Region, Europe's leading economic region, has launched the "Challenge AI Paris Region." This new competition, with a prize of €1 million, is aimed at both Paris Region companies and all those wishing to set up in a base the Paris Region.
In an environment conducive to innovation, with 8,000 start-ups, 1,300 research laboratories and 162,000 researchers, the Paris Region intends to play a major role in the development of new technologies related to Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is one of the major economic and societal issues of tomorrow.
The AI Paris Region Challenge that it is launching illustrates its global ambition in the areas of AI for the entire Paris Region ecosystem, particularly in the fields of mobility and industry 4.0 (infrastructure, applications, and platform). “Artificial Intelligence is a major issue, particularly in relation to economics. Through this challenge, which will also draw investment and talent, we want to send a signal beyond our borders and show that the Paris Region meets the conditions for success," said Valérie Pécresse, President of the Île-de-France Regional Council.
Ten companies will be pre-selected on July 3, 2018 by a jury of experts and will be given support between July and September. Following this, 3 finalists will be chosen. The winners will be announced at the AI meeting in early October, a unifying and defining event for AI in the Paris Region and its international influence, under the co-chairmanship of Bertrand Braunschweig, Director of INRIA and Chairman of the Jury. The prize of €1 million (€700,000 for the winner and €150,000 for the runners up) in the form of a capital endowment, will enable the Region, through the regional investment fund, “Paris Region Venture Fund”, and CEA Investissement, a subsidiary of the French AEC, to support the long-term strategic and commercial development of 3 emerging players in the Paris Region.

This defining event for the startup ecosystem is part of a global strategy to make the Paris Region a “Startup Region” and more specifically the capital of Artificial Intelligence in Europe. It's a real laboratory, creating solutions to meet the challenges of digital and ecological revolutions. At the world’s largest technology show, the CES in Las Vegas, the Region presented its new incentives for companies that are innovating in areas such as Artificial Intelligence and Robotics.
The Paris Region Starter Pack is aimed at all startups or SMEs with between 5 and 250 employees and a turnover of up to $50 million, that want to set up or create a subsidiary in the Paris Region. The objective is to facilitate the establishment of foreign technology companies and enable them to benefit from treatment that fits their projects. The package consists of financial aid of up to €250,000 to support development projects over three years.
For the first time, the Innov’up Proto call for proposals, aiming to support the production of innovation prototypes by young innovative companies, will be open to startups and foreign SMEs wishing to set up in the Paris Region.
