Paris Region: A Leading Region for Autonomous Mobility
The Paris Region has just announced it will invest EUR 100M to make the Paris Region a global leader in terms of autonomous vehicle and future mobility solutions. The market for AVs in France could represent 47 billion euros as soon as 2020 and 515 billion in 2035, according to a recent study by A.T Kearny.
This plan spearheaded by the Region and Île-de-France Mobilités has 3 main objectives:
- Fight against air pollution
- Improve quality of life by offering new transportation solutions
- Create jobs and boost the Paris Region economy
The funding will help finance the construction of dedicated lanes on regional highways to allow the circulation of 20 to 40 autonomous vehicles. Indeed, the President of the Republic committed to creating a legal framework that would allow the testing of Level 4 AVs on French public roads in 2019.
There are already about 10 AV projects being tested around the capital today. Paris Region plans on showcasing the Region’s excellence around mobility during the 2024 Olympics.
What makes Paris Region’s plan for autonomous vehicles stand out is the collective and semi-collective focus. As Valerie Pecresse said in her speech on May 14 “autonomous vehicles must be above all a tool for collective mobility (3 to 4 people). We are even talking about fleets of shuttles, ie collective transportation on highways”.
